Over the past few years, in association with growing societal, governmental and academic recognition of the effects of TBI, particularly in the context of sports-related concussions and military service-related injuries, there have been remarkable advances in clinical and basic neuroscience of TBI. Correspondingly, the field of TBI science has transformed into one of the most dynamic and fertile areas of research. It has also become apparent that TBI is not just a singular disorder, but encompasses single or multiple injuries, of severity ranging from minor to severe, and provokes acute and chronic consequences. It is also increasingly recognized that TBI can trigger latent neurodegenerations with diverse pathologies, such as Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), and in some cases, Alzheimer’s disease (AD) or Parkinson’s disease (PD). This three-day meeting focuses on: 1) What is known about mechanisms and manifestations of traumatic brain injury based on human observational studies; 2) Exploration of molecular mechanisms of injury based on animal models and translational aspects of TBI research; and 3) The development of potential diagnostics and therapeutics.
