Distinct stages of myelination regulated by gamma-secretase and astrocytes in a rapidly myelinating CNS coculture system.
Neuron. 2008 Nov 26;60(4):555-69.

Compared with other key processes such as neuronal differentiation and axonal guidance, we know little about the mechanisms of CNS myelination and remyelination. This has been largely due to the lack of robust in-vitro assays for dissecting the process. The paper by Barres and colleagues describes the development of a rapidly myelinating culture system based on retinal ganglion neurons. This should significantly facilitate dissection of the mechanisms of myelination and perhaps the development of therapeutic strategies for promoting remyelination in diseases such as multiple sclerosis.
