Leonard Guarente and colleagues at MIT have retracted a paper they published July 2010 in Cell. First author Gizem Donmez and colleagues had claimed that the histone deacetylase SIRT1 boosted α-secretase processing of Aβ precursor protein, reducing production of Aβ. Alzforum reported on this work when it was presented at a Keystone meeting and when the paper appeared in print (see Feb 2010 conference news and Jul 2010 research news).

In the retraction, published last August, Donmez and colleagues revealed that several figures were inappropriately manipulated. They claim the errors do not negate the main conclusions of the paper and note that others have since reported that SIRT1 upregulates α-secretase (see Theendakara et al., 2013Lee et al., 2014).—Tom Fagan
