Description
The Aging & Brain Health Alliance at Rutgers University-Newark seeks a postdoctoral fellow interested in applying any of a broad range of techniques and backgrounds to the study of aging and Alzheimer’s disease prevention in older urban African Americans. The scientists are particularly interested in applicants from any of the following backgrounds:
(1) Gerontology, sociology, social psychology, or epidemiology to look at a broad range of social and environmental influences on aging.
(2) Data science/machine learning for analysis of large complex data sets and multidimensional predictive modeling of cognitive changes over time.
(3) Genetics/neurogenetics to analyze both candidate gene and whole-genome analyses of a large genetic data base as related to neurodegenerative disorders, with an emphasis on genetics associated with African ancestry.
(4) Wet/bench lab training in immunology and/or other cellular and molecular methods to analyze blood-based biomarkers of aging, brain health, inflammation/immune health, and their implications for Alzheimer’s disease risk and resilience.
Fellows would participate in an NIH-funded study of Pathways to Healthy Aging in African Americans. The university has an extensive program of community engagement in the Greater Newark area through which to recruit older African Americans into both longitudinal cohort studies and non-pharmacological intervention clinical trials, as well as a large (more than 50 people) interdisciplinary team, with multiple faculty, postdoctoral fellows, staff, and students from neuroscience, neurology, psychology, public health, immunology, kinesiology, and other fields. For additional details, lecture videos, an overview of current lab members and faculty affiliates, as well as downloadable publications, press coverage, and research summaries, see https://brainhealth.rutgers.edu/
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. The position can begin in either January 2025 or Summer/Fall 2025.
Requirements
Applicants Must Have:
- Strong quantitative data-analysis and biostatistics skills for the analysis of experimental data.
- A Ph.D. in any related field, with priorities for backgrounds as identified in the list above.
- Prior experience writing and submitting first-authored English-language academic papers and research grants.
Salary will be commensurate with experience and comparable to other postdoctoral positions at Rutgers University in neuroscience and related fields.
FOREIGN CANDIDATES: Are welcome as long as they meet all three criteria listed above.
