These findings are very interesting. They are among the first data to show that ApoE can directly alter Aß clearance in vivo. If communication between ApoE and Aß in the CNS and plasma in either direction does regulate Aß clearance, this finding may explain part of the way that ApoE regulates Aß levels in the brain. This should definitely be followed up with further studies. Jorge Ghiso's group has also shown that plasma Aß is cleared by the liver (see ARF related news story), and this paper demsonstrates that ApoE appears to regulate that process. This paper suggests that further studies to understand body-wide Aß metabolism need to be further pursued.
