This is an important study that confirms and extends prior chemical AD biomarker studies of CSF isoprostanes and tau while combining them with MRI to improve diagnosis of MCI.
The work is significant because it bodes well for the success of the recently funded AD Neuroimaging Study (see Practical Neurol., 3:30-34, 2004 and a PowerPoint summary. This study seeks to develop and validate an informative biomarker panel of both imaging parameters and chemical analytes in CSF, plasma, and urine that will enable distinction of AD from other dementias along the lines of Grossman et al., 2005 for AD versus frontotemporal dementia as well as prodromal AD from normal brain aging and the prodromal phases of other dementias.
